Many business executives—and especially their millennial employees, who will comprise nearly half the workforce by 2020—are questioning traditional workplace norms. Does work really need to happen between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday? Does work have to take place within the four walls of an office? More and more, the answer to both questions is “No.” The next generation of workers is redefining work as an activity that can happen anywhere and at any time.
Research groups and thought leaders who study this paradigm shift are calling it the “workplace of the future.” A few years ago, Vanson Bourne conducted a “Workplace of the Future” global survey, which revealed that workers use an average of six devices to do their work and spend only two-thirds of their workweek at a desk. Another trend is occurring—known as workshifting— where people shift work to more convenient times and locations.
Mobile computing and BYOD initiatives are another strong component linked to these trends. Not surprisingly, the Workplace of the Future study showed that organizations embracing these next-gen workplace trends are seeing significant operational and strategic advantages over those still clinging to traditional business practices. Specifically, those embracing next-gen workplace concepts and business practices were able to improve their businesses in three areas.
